Melanie dai Medeiros is an interdisciplinary visual artist and unconventional papermaker who resides in RI. Her artwork uses materials and processes that elaborate on the inconsistencies of memory both in the narrative of imagery and physicality of the material. In 2020, Melanie received her MFA from Mass College of Art & Design in Boston where she had obtained her BFA in 2003.
"It Burns" is part of a series that focuses on the formation and act of recall. The paper making process sculpts the medium in visual affinity with our own brain's process of recall, forming the surface into a tactile version of each memory. Like neuro-networks, paper pulp fibers form connections with each other in unexpected ways. "It Burns" is the artist's memory of fire ants exploding from leaves while she was lost on steep hills in Patillas, PR as a child.
