Item Description

This striking print was created by noted artist Hisashi Otsuka of Honolulu. The artwork is unframed, measures 26" x 19" and is 1865/4500. This ukiyo-e style print depicts a fierce samurai with swirling dress and drawn sword. The work evokes bygone times in Japan when determined samurai served their Lords with "Uncommon Valor". The fan-shaped image is beautifully offset by the patterned background and the red headband only serves to enhance this striking image.

Hisashi Otsuka's artwork is a powerful balance of ancient Eastern techniques and modern Western ideas. Like a concert musician with perfect pitch, he has perfect color memory and sense. Otsuka's time-honored poets and warriors, kabuki figures, ukiyo-e women, and elegant calligraphy are steeped in the classical past. Yet in color and composition, his work achieves a vigorous, contemporary context. Monumental in scope and meticulous in detail, it offers anaesthetic of heroic and subtle impact.
