"With a team of eight Longhorns, Santa arrives at a sod shanty, and drops down the chimney to fill the young'uns' boots with toys from his old feed bag."
"This book has beautiful illustrations that really bring the story to life. The classic tale of the night before Christmas told with a Texas twang, it will delight adults, too. James Rice replaces Santa's reindeer with a team of Longhorns, and the winter snow with the Texas dust. It's even more fun if you can find a Texan to read it out loud!"
"Since 1986, James Rice’s classic tale of Texas-sized adventure has charmed the hearts of generations of children in the Lone Star State and beyond. In the midst of a fierce winter storm, Santy arrives on a wagon pulled by eight rangy longhorns with names like Leadfoot, Waleye, and Culane. From the well-worn boots placed near the chimney and filled with toys to the Stetson perched atop ole Santy Claus’ grizzled head, the story abounds with endearing humor. "
"Rice’s talent for injecting personality in his art energizes every drawing, with spreads alternating between black-and-white line drawings and colored pages. The prairie dogs, armadillos, mice, and lone jackrabbit who inhabit the scenes along with Ma and Pa witness the calamities caused by this weathered old cowpoke and his marauding steers. It all works out in the end, and as Santy heads into the night over the mesa he calls out, “Merry Christmas, y’heah? And y’all have a good night!”
"The outstanding list of children’s books written and illustrated by James Rice (1934-2004) and the outpouring of praise for his work from such notable publications as the New York Times, Library Journal, Woman’s Day magazine, Review of Texas Books, Horn Book, and San Diego Union Tribune earned Rice a place in history as one of the South’s leading illustrators of children’s books. Born on a farm in Coleman County, Texas, he held degrees in art from the University of Texas and Howard Payne College. Rice visited schools throughout the country to teach children the joys of writing and illustrating. His achievements are even more amazing given that he was colorblind for most of his life."
