Item Description
Omaha Beach was one of the five D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. The Americans hoped to surprise the Germans by attacking at low tide, but the tide had come in by the time they arrived. The Americans had to face a strongly defended position, with German soldiers dug in and hidden behind concrete walls. The first wave of American soldiers was almost wiped out, but those that made it to cover managed to hold on. The second wave of Americans managed to take out some of the German defenses, and by the third wave the Americans had finally gained a foothold on the beach. From there, they fought their way inland, eventually liberating the town of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. Commemerate this victory with this beautifully framed photo; D-Day: U.S. First Infantry Lands on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944.
