Item Description
"Evolution of the Cowboy" is popularly known as "Sweetheart of the Rodeo", after an image from the poster used as the title and cover art of a 1968 album by the Byrds. Ironically the iconic image of the Cowgirl is a tiny piece of this massively detailed work of art.
The poster serves as an illustrated history of the cowboy from the conquistadors to modern times. Covered in exquistite detail is everything cowboy--fashions, saddles, horses, cattle, the rodeo and much more. "Evolution of the Cowboy" was originally used as a promotion for the Salinas Rodeo in the 1930's. In the 1950's rights were sold to the Levi Strauss Company to redesign the poster for advertising.
Jo Mora was born in Uruguay in 1876 and died in Monterey in 1947. He was an artist (scuptor, painter, muralist), art historian, photographer, illustrator and author.
The poster offered here is an original print circa 1930's, marked Jo Mora Publications Monterey California. It was dry mounted on cardboard in 2002, and nicely preserved. The corners show wear--this valuable work of art was taped to a wall at some point in its history. However there are no tears, rips or stains in the body of the work. Poster measures approximately 24" x 31 1/2", as mounted 32" x 40".
