Item Description
Built in July 1946, the vintage "HW" model has been donated by long-time trail supporter Henry Heyburn. Built just after the close of WWII, the wood slat seats are a reminder that natural cane had been unavailable. Called the HW for "Heavy Water" model it was thought to be "the consummate back-country traveler" in its time. Others think "HW" pays homage to Henry Wicksteed, a civil engineer from Coburg, Ontario who did much of his travelling by canoe during the 1870's-90's. The canoe has moderate rocker, a semi-arch 'yawl' hull, mild tumblehome through the entire length and full ends. With a narrow beam, this canoe is very quick on the water. Stability is traded for a canoe which is agile and responsive. "It takes a little getting used to and once you do, it dances through river rapids."
