Item Description

Gareth Smith is a board maker and artist from the Wollongong, on the South Coast of New South Wales, in Australia. He was born in New Zealand before moving to Australia as a teenager where his passion for surfing took off. It was during this time that Gareth’s other passion, art, began to infiltrate his love of the ocean, starting with just drawing the perfect wave to then adding his art onto his surf craft. What began as a creative outlet grew into a lifelong journey exploring surfboard design and materials, and then using these boards as a canvas for his art. Gareth’s art features repeating patterns and lines, drawing influence form the ocean and his love of the natural beauty that he is surrounded by. Gareth has volunteered for Surfers Healing in Australia for many years and is inspired by the how Izzy Paskowitz and Surfers Healing uses the unique skills of its healers to bring joy to those with Autism.

The board, Soaring, Gareth has donated to Surfers Healing this year is made from recycled eps foam and Paulownia wood. The art is inspired by nature and especially the sea birds we see soaring over the ocean and riding the wind currents. Birds have always inspired our imaginations, fearless, beautiful in appearance and graceful in their movements. They are also the universal symbol for freedom, something that we all strive for.
