Nine Suns - Cabernet Sauvignon, Houyi Vineyard, 3-Year Vertical - 2016, 2017, 2018

Nine Suns and Houyi Vineyard are so named based on a Chinese legend. The legend tells the story of ten individual suns that would rise and set each day, taking turns doing so. One day all 10 suns rose at once scorching the earth and wreaking havoc. Houyi, a mythological Chinese archer, was asked by the emperor to eliminate the suns -- he successfully shot down nine suns leaving only one. The earth was once again restored, balanced, and harmonious. This idea of harmony is core to winegrowing, and encapsulates the vision for this unique site.

Tucked away on the eastern side of Napa Valley, Pritchard Hill is home to some of the best-known wine names in the world. Houyi Vineyard is perched above the fog line at an elevation of approximately 1,300 feet. The site enjoys plenty of sunshine coupled with cool breezes in the afternoon from the bay. On a clear day, you can see San Francisco with the Salesforce Tower shining in the distance. The soils here are unimaginably rocky, adding a dimension of difficulty to the farming but also a depth to the wine.

Crafted by esteemed winemakers Sam Kaplan (2011-16) and Philippe Melka (2017-21), these wines showcase the extraordinary terroir of Houyi Vineyard. Houyi has a distinct personality that can be identified in its wines. The descriptors that come up over and over again include violets, blue and red fruits, herbs de Provence and wild sage; lifted aromatics and wines that are somehow dense and weightless at the same time.

Winning bidders located in Northern California may pick up their items in Napa at a location and date to be arranged -- details will be emailed to winning bidders. Items not picked up by March 10, 2023, will be mailed to the winning bidder, and purchaser is responsible for shipping and insurance costs.

Items purchased by bidders residing outside of Northern California will be shipped (if possible) on or around Tuesday, February 7, 2023, unless you tell us that you wish to pick up your item.
