The Salon Concert Players

AJ Kim, viola: NCA Parent AJ Kim is known for coaching the 6th Grade Boys' Basketball team, but his lifelong passion is for violin and viola. AJ played violin throughout his life, and was the only non-music major accepted into the University of Illinois Orchestra, where he played both first violin and viola.

Following college, AJ shifted fully to viola, during which time he studied with Principal Violist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Li Kuo Chang. While he eventually pursued a career in law, he never left his violin and viola behind. He is delighted to play with this talented group to support our school community.

Dominic Johnson, violin:  Dominic Johnson has called Chicago home for over 20 years and hails from the Pacific Northwest. In the 90’s he played viola in an indie-rock band based in Chicago and Louisville called Rachel’s, and subsequently felt the Windy City's magnetic pull draw him into its heady artistic orbit.

Career highlights have included co-founding and executive directing the New Millennium Orchestra from 2005-15, performing his silent film score "Beats, the Bauhaus, and the Birth of Abstract Film" at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, and spending three seasons in the music department at Comedy Central’s Emmy-nominated TV show Drunk History. He has performed with Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Renée Fleming, Father John Misty, Lupe Fiasco, and Mason Bates.

Mr. Johnson currently works for Interactive Brokers while occasionally performing and recording from his home studio. Othr recent musical activities have included membership in the University of Chicago's Grossman Ensemble and creating arrangements, directing, and performing for Sudan Archives' 2020 NPR Tiny Desk concert. Russell Rolen, cello: Three-time GRAMMY nominee Russell Rolen is a founding member and executive director of Spektral Quartet, a string quartet renowned for its bold, inquisitive programming and innovative collaborative projects. Recognized as “Chicagoans of the Year” in 2017 by The Chicago Tribune, Spektral Quartet commissioned and premiered more than 80 new works for string quartet, many by some of today’s leading composers, leaving an indelible mark on the string-quartet repertoire. Over its 12-year history, the quartet had partnerships, concert appearances, and educational residencies at some of the country’s most notable institutions, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, NPR’s Tiny Desk, the Library of Congress, Miller Theater, the American Academy in Rome, the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), University Musical Society (U-Michigan), Northwestern University, The University of Chicago, The Juilliard School, Stanford University, and the New World Symphony.

Lesley Swanson, flute: Lesley Swanson has served as Principal Flute of the Chicago Composers Orchestra since 2011. She has performed over 110 world premieres with the CCO and has worked with hundreds of living composers.

Lesley is an active educator. Through the CCO, she has collaborated with student composers at Columbia College of Chicago by performing new works and utilizing her flute expertise to provide guidance in composing for the instrument. Lesley has been teaching a wide age range of students privately for 15 years. She has also been a Teaching Artist for the Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project, an organization which seeks to provide a safe and fun musical experience for young students with limited access to the arts. Lesley holds a bachelor's of music from Grand Valley State University where she studied with Judith Kemph (Grand Rapids Symphony), and a master's of music from Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University where she studied with world-renowned flutist Donald Peck (Chicago Symphony Orchestra).
