Thoreau represent every stage in his twenty-two years of active writing. This edition, introduced by historian Howard Zinn, includes "Resistance to Civil Government," better known as "Civil Disobedience," "Slavery in Massachusetts," "A Plea for Captain John Brown" and "Life Without Principle," among others.
