How do writers work? How does a literary work move from abstract idea in the author’s mind to a physical reality, in the form of a book or other publication? Visit the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia, one of the world’s great repositories of rare books and manuscript and home to iconic treasures of world literature, for a deep dive into the writers’ work processes. Together, we will journey into the Rosenbach’s atmospheric historic library to study manuscripts, typescripts, and first editions of iconic and lesser-known works to consider the writer’s work. Artifacts to be studied include the manuscript of James Joyce’s Ulysses, handwritten research notes kept by Bram Stoker as he wrote Dracula, the manuscript of Charles Dickens’s The Pickwick Papers, typescripts for LGBT Hollywood icon Mercedes de Acosta’s Here Lies the Heart, drafts of poetry by Marianne Moore, and the manuscript and first edition of the novel Batouala by French author René Maran, the first Black author to win the Prix Goncourt.
The hands-on tour will be led by Dr. Alexander Lawrence Ames, Director of Outreach & Engagement at the Rosenbach.
