Through abstract painting, I blend psychological and bodily landscapes with geographical terrains to draw attention to our codependence, fragility, mortality, and resilience. Beginning in my neighbourhood, kitchen, and garden; I grow and gather vegetable matter, plants, sediments, and flowers to create natural pigments. In the studio, I soak, boil, and press these materials into my canvases to release their colours. Combining fibre art and printmaking processes with natural and synthetic dyes, I create repeating patterns and forms which echo across each canvas.

Mimicking earthly, celestial, and animal bodies, these prints inform how each composition is finalized using oil and acrylic paint materials. The process of creating paintings allows me to explore the dance between chaos and control, what it means to be a living, breathing, feeling animal in a rapidly changing environment, and ways to care for myself and others around me.

Par la peinture abstraite, je mêle les paysages psychologiques et physiologiques aux terrains géographiques pour attirer l’attention sur notre codépendance, notre fragilité, notre mortalité, notre résilience. À partir de mon quartier, de ma cuisine et de mon jardin : je fais pousser et je ramasse la matière potagère, les plantes, les sédiments et les fleurs pour créer des pigments naturels. En studio, je trempe, fais bouillir et presse ces matériaux sur la toile pour en faire ressortir la couleur. Je combine l’art des fibres et le processus de gravure avec des teintures naturelles et synthétiques pour créer une suite de motifs et de formes qui se répètent sur chaque toile.

Gillian King is an artist and art therapist (thesis pending). She holds an MFA from the University of Ottawa and is the winner of the 2019 Espronceda Centre for the Arts and Culture Artistic Prize, the 2017 RBC Emerging Artist Award, and the 2017 Nancy Petry Award. King has shown in galleries nationally and internationally and her work has been featured in Border Crossings Magazine, Canadian Art Magazine, Create! Magazine, and CBC Gem.

Gillian King est artiste et candidate en art thérapie. Elle est titulaire d’une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l’Université d’Ottawa et a remporté le prix artistique du Espronceda Centre for the Arts and Culture en 2019, le prix Artistes émergents RBC en 2017 et le prix Nancy Petry en 2017. Les œuvres de King ont été exposées dans des galeries à l’échelle nationale et internationale et son travail a été présenté dans la revue Border Crossings, la revue Canadian Art, la revue Create ! et sur CBC Gem.
