ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Painting has been a part of Leigh’s life for as long as she can remember; and as a young girl, if asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, her immediate and heartfelt answer was, "an artist." For years, she took Saturday classes at a small studio in Baltimore and was a studio art major at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. But amidst the popularity of abstract paintings and persuaded by many that there was no place for representational art among serious and successful artists, she let go of her dream of painting for a different (and highly gratifying) career path. For 35 years her days were filled with family and work as a high school counselor; yet, she never ceased to be captivated by light and shifting colors in the landscape.

Deeply moved, inspired, and encouraged by artists she met at a 2013 plein air event while on vacation in the Tetons, she began to paint again. One year later, she began painting full-time, and now there is little that brings her as much peace and pleasure as fully experiencing, and attempting to capture on canvas, a small piece of the landscape before her eyes. An enthusiastic and adventurous traveler, Leigh prefers painting her memories to buying postcards. Viewers will recognize many of her favorite locations including the coast of Maine, the Maryland countryside, and her beloved Tetons where she returns every summer.

Leigh finds enormous reward in pausing, being still, listening, and looking really hard at the natural world in which we live. She has discovered the practice of observation to be both humbling and grounding; and by painting out-of-doors, she feels connected to the place and moment in a way that wouldn’t have been possible had she kept passing through. She hopes that her paintings will inspire others to get outside, explore, and linger, perhaps seeing the natural world through a slightly different lens. In these times where things, information, and people move so fast, “connection” has become critically important; and for Leigh, painting provides an intimate connection to people and places which increases the richness of her life and brings her joy beyond measure.
