Item Description
Mollusc 2023, Monotype, 16 in x 14 in 10 in x 8 in
Mollusc is a monotype from my current series based on field research in the wetland at Petrie Island and my investigation of native species of freshwater mussels living there. Elusive river-bottom dwellers, freshwater mussels are considered keystone species of their aquatic environment, yet they are declining in numbers and are globally threatened.
Purposely abstract, my holistic print impression includes elements of both the mussels’ inner pearlescence and outer wear and abrasions as continuous with the fluid complexity of their river surroundings. Abstraction in this series conveys a challenge to our human presumption of knowledge and encourages awareness of other ways of being in the world that resist our comprehension and exist beyond the barrier of what we normally can see.
