Item Description

All Hands on Deck, 2023, Acrylic on Canvas, 14 in x 18 in

I finished this painting right around the time the Nigerian presidential election was held. I think the election occupied my subconscious mind without me realizing it. Election period is often stressful, even dangerous, for a lot of people. This year was no different but there was something else. Though the outcome and results were different than I had hoped, and the infrastructure had failed us yet again, it was satisfying seeing millions of young Nigerians exercise their democratic responsibility to vote. I felt a renewed sense of hope. In the painting, many hands come together to build a ship, a vessel that takes us from where we are, to where we need to be. I believe that to build a desired and much needed future; everyone needs to be involved in the process. Everyone has a role to play, a responsibility. All hands on deck.

Since starting my practice in 2019, I have participated in a variety of group exhibitions, including “Origins & Futures” at Wall Space Gallery (Ottawa, 2022), “How I Love You” at the Ottawa Art Gallery’s Gallerie Annexe (Ottawa, 2022), and “Don’t Sleep On Canada” by Good Black Art (NYC, 2022)

All Hands on Deck, 2023, acrylique sur toile, 14 po x 18 po
