Item Description
Portrait of a Woman Who Does Not Exist, 2023, Acrylic on Canva, 8 in x 10 in
In this striking painting, the artist has boldly delved into the mysterious realm of AI-generated faces. The subject of the painting is a mesmerizing figure, created entirely by an AI model that does not exist in reality. And yet, there is something eerily familiar about her - a haunting sense of recognition that lingers in the mind like a memory from long ago. As the artist meticulously captured every detail of this enigmatic face on canvas, they couldn't help but ponder the uncanny valley - that strange sensation when something is almost, but not quite, human. With each brushstroke, they found themselves drawn deeper into this uncanny valley, exploring the intricacies of this AI-generated face and the emotions it evoked.
As the painting neared completion, a sudden realization dawned upon the artist. Perhaps this face felt familiar because it was referencing someone they knew and loved - or even their own features. This notion only added to the mystique of the painting and the intrigue surrounding AI image generators, which often remain shrouded in secrecy and ethical quandaries. As a working artist, the creator of this mesmerizing painting is keenly aware of the nuances and complexities of the intersection between art and technology. And in this powerful work, they have masterfully captured the essence of that intersection, leaving the viewer to ponder the fascinating questions it raises.

Hasina is a multidisciplinary, self-taught visual artist and community organizer. Before the pandemic, you could have found her live painting at your favorite events or tabling at an art market. Nowadays, you can catch her sharing memes on her Instagram stories or giving art workshops via Zoom when she is not painting away her wildest afro-futurist dreams.
