About the artist, Norma Markley
I work in a variety of mediums—including neon, embroidery, collage, and prints—I was trained in painting and consider it an integral part of my process. I describe my practice as “recombining various apple pie images of Americana, using felicitously chosen media,” and “thoughtful symbols of throwaway culture.” With a wry sense of humor, my work references pop cultural icons and urban life, as well as the writing of Vladimir Nabokov, Susanna Kaysen, Charles Bukowski, and Georges Bataille. My sources of inspiration often include Art Deco motels, ‘50s color schemes, and color chips from paint stores, among others.
