Item Description
Anna Walinska: Drawing of Nunez de Polanco, ink on paper, 1933, 22-1/4 x 14-3/4
Anna Walinska met flamenco dancer Nunez de Polanco in the early 1930's. She did a series of drawings of him, but he couldn't afford to buy one from her, so instead she traded a drawing for dance lessons. Eventually she began performing with his dance troupe, and appeared with Polanco in a performance at Town Hall in NYC to benefit the Loyalistas in the Spanish Civil War. She memorialized that performance in "Self-Portrait: Flamenco," 1939 -- now in the HRM collection and on exhibit in "Order/Reorder."
