Item Special Note

Mary Drewry Garber (1952-2009) was a Richmond, VA artist who received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is best known for her whimsical raku clay creatures resembling something like a pig/dog/hippo that she called "pogs." In an artist's statement she said: "Amidst the angst of youth and college, I found myself making doodles of wild, ferocious-looking creatures; somewhat wolf-like, somewhat lumpy. These doodles usually became etchings, but I turned to them when I needed a subject for clay sculpture….Dance, the Muppets, Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton, and James Thurber are strong influences on my work.... This piece is one of those early etchings.
