"This image is from a winter roost of Long-eared Owls that I stumbled across while wandering around a Colorado state park. These winter daytime roosts are critical for these owls as they are usually in protected alcoves or thickets of trees to protect the owls from winter winds and prying eyes. They are usually found near open fields and plains where these owls will begin to hunt as afternoon turns to evening and night. This particular roost consisted of seven Long-eared Owls and this individual was acting as the lookout and would check on my location by opening her eyes for a brief period of time. So as not to disturb her rest time and the rest of the roost, I kept my distance and hung around for about half an hour before quietly sneaking off through the understory.
As a wildlife photographer, I strive to educate others about the wildlife that can be found in the park down the road to countries on the other side of the planet. I am a conservationist first and work to promote the protection and conservation of animals and their habitats around the world. Having had the opportunity to work on projects around the world, I have had the opportunity to see amazing wildlife and habitats that not everyone is able to see. I believe that people protect what they love, but to love something they must know about it. There are species and habitats out there that people do not know exist, so protecting them is challenging. My photography is aimed to educate people about these species and habitats, whether it is the owl living down the street or a leopard in Kenya, so they can begin to understand and care about their conservation."
