Item Special Note
Born in 1936, and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, trained in art at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), Yuristy drew inspiration from these rural roots for his art practice. From a refurbished church-turned-studio in the 1970s, he embraced the subconscious, absurd and everyday experiences in a series of fantastical drawings and ceramics. Through these creations, Yuristy contributed to the development of Regina Funk Art, a pop art movement in which artists used humour and mixed materials to create anti-consumer commentary. During this time, he also founded the “Creative Playground Workshop,” through which he created public commissions: large wooden animal sculptures that doubled as play structures for children.
Né en 1936 et élevé sur une ferme en Saskatchewan, Russell Yuristy étudiera l’art à l’Université du Wisconsin, à Madison. Plus tard, ces racines rurales seront pour lui source d’inspiration. Dans les années 1970, depuis son studio installé dans une église rénovée, il reproduit en dessins et en céramiques fantastiques le subconscient, l’absurde et les expériences quotidiennes qui l’inspirent. Ses œuvres joueront un rôle dans la montée du Regina Funk Art, un mouvement pop art par lequel les artistes s’opposent à la consommation par leurs dessins en techniques mixtes remplis d’humour. C’est également à cette époque qu’il fonde l’Atelier de terrain de jeu créatif (le Creative Playground Workshop), par lequel il complète ses commandes publiques : de grandes sculptures de bois en forme d’animaux servant de structures de jeu.
