Mark Hynes/Sax or Flute Lesson, $25/1 chance

1-hour private lesson for saxophone or flute, for childre or adults. Can be an in-home lesson or at HCCS, pending approval.

Mark has performed/recorded with Quincy Jones, Christian McBride, Jon Faddis, Bernard Purdie, Rodney Whitaker, Jon Hendricks, Max Weinberg, Bobby Watson, Steven Bernstein, Lew Soloff, Victor Lewis. Kevin Mahogany, Craig Taborn, Art Baron, Karriem Riggins, Howard Johnson, Art Baron, Marcus Belgrave, Lizz Wright, Junko Onishi, Jerry Dodgion, Chuck Israels, Harold Ashby and Earl May.

He has appeared with the Quincy Jones Orchestra, Max Weinberg Big Band, Rodney Whitaker Octsemble, Grover Mitchell Orchestra, Art Baron’s The Duke’s Men, Gerald Cleaver Quintet, David Berger Jazz Orchestra, Bobby Battle Quartet, Chuck Israels NY Little Big Band, Lavay Smith, and the Brian Pareschi Quintet, among many others.

He has performed at the New York City Ballet, Kennedy Center, Apollo Theater, LA’s Disney Concert Hall, Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, Jazz At Lincoln Center’s Allen Room, Town Hall, Chicago Theater, Detroit Opera House, Folly Theater (KC), Detroit Jazz Festival, and the Chicago Blues Festival to name a few.

Growing up in Chicago, saxophonist Mark Hynes was immersed from an early age in the blues-drenched tradition that produced such hometown heroes as Johnny Griffin and Von Freeman.

Moving to Detroit after college, he began working with the new generation of jazz lions there, as a regular member of bands led by Rodney Whitaker, Gerald Cleaver, Greg Burk, and Bobby Battle. All night jam sessions locking horns with James Carter and the great Larry Smith, workshops with the legendary Marcus Belgrave, and his weekly residency at Bert's Marketplace honed his chops Detroit-style.

Upon moving to New York, Mark recorded and toured with The Harlem Nutcracker, featuring such jazz luminaries as Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Britt Woodman, Dennis Irwin, and Steven Bernstein. 

Since then, he has performed in jazz clubs around the globe--Birdland NYC, Birdland (Vienna), Half Note (Athens), Fasching (Stockholm), The Green Mill, Nefertiti (Goteborg), The Derby (LA), Dakota (St. Paul) to name a few.

Mark has played orchestra pits for the Broadway shows Hairspray and All Shook Up, Smokey Joe’s Café (Off-Broadway), and has appeared on the TV show Mark Twain Prize for Humor (PBS) and radio, A Prairie Home Companion. His first film appearance is in Robert DeNiro’s The Good Shepherd, where he performs on stage.

He has also appeared frequently with popular artists like James Ingram, Patti Austin, Patti LuPone, The O’Jays, Chaka Khan, Rita Moreno, Norm Lewis and Sir Mack Rice. He has performed with the tap dancers Savion Glover and Jason Samuels Smith. 

Mark holds a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music.
