Item Description
Elizabeth "Bessie" Coleman was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman and first Native American to hold a pilot license, and is the earliest known Black person to earn an international pilot's license.
Celebrate her story and Black history with this doll and book about Bessie.
The Bessie Coleman Inspiring Women Series Barbie is perfect for collectors or little ones looking for inspiration.
The accompanying book, Flying Free: How Bessie Coleman's Dreams Took Flight, is based on Karyn Parson's award-winning Sweet Blackberry series, which includes children's books and animated films that highlight stories of Black heroes in history.
The book was illustrated by R. Gregory Christie, a multi award-winning illustrator and author for numerous children's books. His passion for art has presented him the NAACP Image Award, Caldecott Honor, Sibert Honor, an Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award nomination, three New York Times 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books of the Year Award, and six Coretta Scott King Honor Awards in Illustration.
