Item Description

Baldwin A Baby Grand Piano. 5'6", S/N 55900, 1927

This piano, once owned by Pulitzer-Prize winning writer and environmentalist Wallace Stegner, is a very good condition. Truly, this instrument is a work of art unto itself.  With rich history and original ivory keys, this piano is a unique find.

Baldwin pianos have a rich history that spans over a century, with the Baldwin Piano Company being a significant name in American piano manufacturing since its founding. One of Baldwin's notable contributions to piano technology was the introduction of the Baldwin Soundboard, a pivotal innovation that significantly enhanced sound projection and tonal quality. This development propelled Baldwin pianos into homes, concert halls, and recording studios worldwide.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail and using high-quality materials, Baldwin pianos are celebrated for their robust construction and exceptional tonal clarity. The company's commitment to tonal excellence and innovative craftsmanship has solidified Baldwin pianos as a preferred choice among pianists and music enthusiasts alike.

The piano was recently appraised, including the following detailed notes: "The case is decent, with a few scuffs and faint blemishes. The naturals are ivory, in very good condition minus a couple of chips at the fronts of the keytops. Soundboard and bridges are intact and without cracks. The piano was rebuilt sometime in the past 40 years, including strings, hammers, and wippens. The hammer, damper, and key felt shows moderate wear but the action is in good regulation. The instrument has fine tone, resonance, sustain, and tuning stability, and exhibits the light touch associated with early 20th century pianos. Brass needs polishing, and the instrument needs dusting and thorough cleaning. All in all, it is a quality piano, well suited for a living room or home."
