Dr. Jerry Sue Thornton is President of Cuyahoga Community College, the largest community college in Ohio. The College's mission is to provide high-quality, accessible and affordable educational opportunities and services -- including university transfer, technical and lifelong learning programs -- that promote individual development and improve the overall quality of life in a multicultural community.

Dr. Thornton came to Cuyahoga Community College in 1992. Under her leadership the College has converted to a semester calendar, evaluated and updated the College curriculum, implemented modern technology and has opened technology learning centers at the Eastern, Metropolitan and Western campuses.

The College serves 60,000 students annually through more than 70 degree programs and unique services for special population segments. Reaching out to the community, the College has partnerships that include business and industry, the Playhouse Square Foundation, local school districts, NASA, other colleges and universities, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Committed to ensuring the College has a strong community presence, Dr. Thornton serves on several corporate, nonprofit, and foundation boards. These include, but are not limited to: National City Corporation, Applied Industrial Technologies, American Greetings, RPM International, inc., American Family Insurance, Greater Cleveland Partnership, The Cleveland Foundation, and Playhouse Square Foundation.

Dr. Thornton's educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor and Master of Arts degree from Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky. Dr. Thornton also holds honorary doctorates of humane letters from College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, Minnesota and Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio. In addition, she is a graduate of The Institute for the Management of Lifelong Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Thornton's many awards and honors reflect her commitment to the education profession and service to the community. Most recently, Dr. Thornton was recognized as one of the top 50 influential people in Northeast Ohio. Those selected were recognized for their ability to influence public opinion, the public discourse, and the community agenda. Also in 2004, Dr. Thornton received the City Year Idealism in Action Award. Prior awards are quite numerous, including in 1999 being inducted to the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame by Governor Bob Taft.

Dr. Thornton holds several professional affiliations, including Alpha Kappa Alpha. She is in great demand as a presenter for international, national and local groups. In addition, she has written for several publications, including books, book chapters and numerous professional articles.
