Item Description

Shirley A. Smith was reelected to the Ohio House of Representatives for her third term in November 2002, representing District 10 in Cleveland. She is currently a ranking member on the Health Committee and serves on the Banking, Pensions and Securities, Criminal Justice, and Juvenile/Family Law committees and on the Children's Health Care/Family Services subcommittee.

As a State Representative, Ms. Smith works to advocate both for the issues of her Cleveland area district, and for the political issues facing the disenfranchised across the state of Ohio. Her genuine concern for the socially and economically disadvantaged is demonstrated through the bills she has championed as legislator. As the 125th General Assembly begins, Ms. Smith is focusing on the issues of voting, term limits, HIV/AIDS, prison reform and forming a Capital Case Commission to study the death penalty. She has been featured in Cleveland Magazine for her achievements as a legislator and in The Crusader for her work against the death penalty.

Representative Smith began her career, not in government, but the field of communications. She started working as a radio talk show host for a major radio station in Cleveland, before moving to television. Working for a network affiliate, she served in a variety of capacities including promotion and public relations. While working at the radio station, Ms. Smith interviewed prominent politicians and community leaders focusing on a range of government and community-based issues. As both talk show host and publicist, Ms. Smith has exhibited a unique ability to communicate articulately and effectively behind the scenes and over the airwaves.

Her professional experience in communications has given her a solid, yet diverse background in the most successful ways to manage and communicate with her constituents. "The political arena is one area where I can use my meticulous organizational skills to effectively communicate the needs of the people to the government and ascertain successful outcomes," Smith said.

Ms. Smith's commitment to diplomacy and democracy is strong as well.

"As part of a family of eleven children and as a mother and grandmother, I have learned to truly understand the meaning of diplomacy and the democratic process. I continue to uphold my strong belief that one should do all he or she can do to help their fellow man."

In addition to her position in the state legislature, Ms. Smith is also the Brand Development Manager of the Cleveland Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Working for the number one soft-drink manufacturer in the world, her responsibilities include product brand development, sales and promotional plans, company sponsored community fundraising campaigns, and promoting, maintaining and enhancing the image of the company.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Representative Smith attended Cleveland public schools and received a bachelor of arts (B.A.) in Communications and an associate degree (A.A.) from Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Community College, respectively.
