Bruce H. Akers retired in 2000 as senior vice president, Civic Affairs, for KeyBank, a KeyCorp Bank. He held the same position with Society Bank. He was also chairman of the Key Foundation. Prior to Society's merger with Ameritrust, he was vice president, Public Relations, and assistant to the Chairman for Ameritrust Co. N.A.

Before joining Ameritrust, Akers was executive secretary to Cleveland Mayor Ralph Perk from 1975-1977. He was an investment officer for Roulston and Company, Inc., for several years before moving to Cleveland City Hall. He began his banking career 44 years ago at National City Bank.

He is President of Cleveland Opera, President of ParkWorks (formerly Clean-Land, Ohio), President of the Cuyahoga County Mayors and City Managers Association, and Vice-Chairman of the Cleveland Grand Prix Charities Foundation. He is a Trustee and on the Executive Committee of The Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Business Volunteers Unlimited and the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland. He is past president/chairman of the Cleveland Advertising Association, the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, the Princeton Alumni Association of Northern Ohio, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland, The Salvation Army of Greater Cleveland, the Citizens League Research Institute, the Greater Cleveland Committee on Hunger, and Cleveland's Promise (the local arm of America's Promise). In June 2000, he completed 30 years as a member of the National Board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.

He also serves as a trustee of the Cleveland Food Bank, the Citizens League Research Institute, City Year Cleveland, United Way Services, Look Up to Cleveland, Town Hall-Cleveland, and the Ohio Citizens for the Arts. He is Co-Chair of the Committee on Community Re-Entry. He is on the Advisory Council of the Alzheimer's Association, the Community Advisory Committee for the Cleveland Restoration Society, the Advisory Board of the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland and the March of Dimes, the Cleveland Leadership Prayer Breakfast Steering Committee, the Community Advisory Council of the Junior League of Cleveland, the Advisory Board of Cleveland Bridge Builders, an Advisory Trustee of the Nature Center of Shaker Lakes, and an Honorary Trustee of University Settlement. He is a member of the Visiting Committee to the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University, and is a member of the Central and Policy Committees of the Cuyahoga County Republican Organization, and Vice Chairman of its Executive Committee. He is an Advisory Member of The Thomas H. White Foundation.

He is a graduate of Leadership Cleveland and is President of his Leadership Cleveland class. In 1970, Akers was designated one of the Outstanding Young Men of America. In 1975, he received the Big Brother of the Year Award from Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland. In 1990, Akers was given the Lighthouse Award from the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, for career accomplishments in public relations and contributions to the profession and the community. In 1992, he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. In 1993, he received the Volunteer of the Year Award from Leadership Cleveland. In 1995, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Princeton Alumni Association of Northern Ohio. In 1996, he was honored as United Way Services' Volunteer of the Year, and received The Salvation Army Divisional Advisory Board Award for "outstanding, unwavering and selfless service" to the Army. In 1997, he received the Providence House Community Caregiver Award, and the General William Booth Award, The Salvation Army's highest award to a civilian. In 1999, he was inducted into the Cleveland Advertising Association's Hall of Fame. In 2000, he received the President's Spirit Award from Christmas in April Cleveland, the 2000 Community Award from the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the Above and Beyond Award from Jobs for America's Graduates. In 2001, he was presented with the Frederick C. Robbins Spirit of Courage Award from the March of Dimes, Ohio Chapter.

He is a graduate of University School, Princeton University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. Akers and his wife, Barbara, are residents of Pepper Pike, where he is currently serving in his fourth term as Mayor.
