David Rowland (born 1924) studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where Charles and Ray Eames, Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia and Eero Saarinen attended school. He also trained with Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and Norman Bel Geddes.
The unique combination of sophisticated European modern design and American technical know-how allowed Rowland to create some of the most unique and comfortable seating produced. In 1963 he was awarded the grand prize at the prestigous Milan Triennale for his much lauded 40/4 chair.
