CARNEGIE HALL PRESENTS: Maxim Vengerov and Lilya Zilberstein
Isaac Stern Auditorium, Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 8:00 PM
Maxim Vengerov, Violin and Lilya Zilberstein, Piano
MOZART Adagio in E Major, K. 261 BEETHOVEN Sonata for Violin and Piano in C Minor, Op. 30, No.2 PROKOFIEV Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in F Minor, Op. 80 SHOSTAKOVICH Ten Preludes from Op. 34 (arr. Tziganov)
Among Russian artists, during the Soviet period, the most honored composers--aside from those in the Russian tradition itself--were the giants of the Viennese classical era and their immediate predecessors. Beethoven enjoyed particular acclaim, such that one of the major chamber ensembles of the 1940s and beyond, for which Shostakovich wrote many of his string quartets, called itself the Beethoven Quartet. Mozart was similarly prized, and the composer whom both of them honored as much as any in the entire history of music, Johann Sebastian Bach. The first half of this program begins with works by two of these classical era composers, balancing them on the second half with two major works by Russian composers of the Soviet era which were inspired responses to the classics. Prokofiev's F-Minor Violin Sonata has been called his most Beethovenian work, and Shostakovich's Preludes are only one of several homages that he made to the work of J. S. Bach.
Many thanks for the generosity of Carnegie Hall for this opportunity.
