Item Description

Take a personalized and guided all-day tour from a local historian of this unique and beautiful area of our country. Lewisburg, the county capital, was designated a National Trust "Distinctive Destination" because of its architecture, historic sites, cultural events and strong sense of place that make it, and the rest of the county, a great place to visit. Your tour will depart from the famous and elegant historic resort The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs (a Historic Hotel of America), and as you visit small and historic towns and sites around the county area, your guide will talk about the history of the growth of the area. From the arrival of the settlers from the Virginia coast and Piedmont in the 1750s, and their conflicts with the indians, through the development of the Springs to serve the wealthy Southern society before the Civil War. The Springs were linked by stage coach trails and quite often families would travel from one to another.
Your guide, G. Davis Musser, is a local preservationist, recent board member of the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace in Hillsboro, WV, and has volunteered for the National Trust and Woodrow Wilson House in Washington, DC.
