Item Special Note
While I did not draw "RHU Gharib" until February or March of 2006, the inspiration came from my 35-day stay in "the hole." I did not take a single shower during those 35 days because, to receive a shower, I would have had to strip naked, wrap a bath towel around my waist, cuff my hands behind my back and have a braided leather leash attached to me. We are escorted to and from the shower in this fashion. I preferred taking care of my hygenic needs in the sink in the cell where I was confined 24 hours a day rather than to be escorted naked on a leash. The original drawing was done with a ball point pen on the back of a notice that had been posted on a bulletin board. The drawing was published in the June 2006 edition of (the PA prison society's) "Graterfriends" newsletter. I was subsequently informed that "RHU Gharib" had been "received poorly" by top DOC officials and by the prison society. The result was that "Graterfriends'" policy has been changed and it will no longer print drawings/cartoons produced by prisoners.
