Item Special Note
The motivation for my piece came from watching the news. This news article was about the 9-11 memorial being built in NYC. It pertained to the rising costs and the bickering going on among city officials. My heart just about broke. Had they really forgotten what the 9-11 memorial was about? That is when I decided to do this piece. I was going to send it to the mayor of NYC and let him know how I felt. It wasn't intended just for the mayor alone, but for the people of NYC. I was afraid to send it to him, because being an inmate, I thought he would just throw it away. Thank God now they will get to see it and remember those who died. The symbolism used in this piece contains my feelings. The eagle stands for the strength of this great country of ours. The shield on the eagle represents all of the brave soldiers who have died fighting terrorism around the world. The banner in the eagle's mouth gives the reason for the name of the piece. The liberty bell represents the principles this nation was founded upon. The grapevine border stands for the grapes of God's rath, from The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Although the piece appears unsigned, it isn't. I have hidden my initials, RS, within the grapevine, using the vine to form the letters.
