Sunset Cellars

2003 Syrah - Twilight Ridge - Suisun Valley - Two Bottles

This wine is bottled under the Twilight Ridge label, which is used for wines produced as joint ventures between vineyard (Ledgewood Vineyards) and winery (Sunset Cellars). The product thus represents close collaboration from field to bottle.

Collaboration of Roger King, grape grower and viticulturalist of our own Suisun Valley, on the left, and Winemaker, Douglas Sparks, on the right.

Buy this wine and then arrange to meet the winemaker and viticulturalist. We'll help you. Support your local winemakers.

WINEMAKER'S NOTES:
Aromas of violets and spice lead to rich blackberry and dark cherry fruit with hints of chocolate and pepper. This is a supple and aromatic wine balancing soft tannins, ripe fruit, and moderate alcohol. Go ahead, have another glass--we'll make more.

APPELLATION:
Suisun Valley (Solano County)

Suisun Valley, located next to the southeast corner of the Napa Valley appellation, is not a well-known growing region--yet. Its favorable climate and soils have attracted a good deal of vineyard development in recent years, building on an extensive, albeit little-known, history of grape growing. We believe it will develop a growing reputation for quality and value.

VINEYARDS:
This is a young vineyard that straddles and old streambed. Very rocky on one side, the site rises slightly into marginally deeper soil above the old watercourse. Cool marine air in the evenings moderates the warm daytime temperatures, allowing long hang times for the grapes and surprising complexity for such young vines.

VINTAGE:
Despite high temperatures in early September, the Syrah harvest took place in October, as usual. The longer hang time and moderate yields contributed to the wine's complexity and structure.

COMPOSITION:
Syrah 99.5%, Carignane 0.5%
