Sunset Cellars
2002 Zinfandel - Ledgewood Vineyards - Suisun Valley
WINEMAKER'S NOTES:
The wine opens with bright berry and cherry aromas with a touch of spice. Its raspberry and blackberry flavors, soft tannins and firm acidity make it a pleasure to drink now, though hints of vanilla and pepper suggest it will reward aging over the next few years. A long, crisp finish adds a hint of plum. We've paired it with meat, chicken and vegetarian dishes, and even with strong-flavored fish like salmon...all in the interest of continuing research and quality control, of course.
APPELLATION:
Suisun Valley (Solano County)
VINEYARDS:
This vineyard is on a small knoll near the Napa County line. Warm daytime temperatures moderated by cool marine air in the evenings contribute to bright, complex grape flavors with good acidity. The clone is from the Summit Lake vineyards on Howell Mountain.
VINTAGE:
This was the sixth commercial harvest for this vineyard. The timing of harvest was typical, despite a burst of heat in late August. The vineyard was picked in two lots, 10 days apart, to ensure consistent ripeness and balance. Yields were moderate, under 4 tons per acre.
COMPOSITION:
Zinfandel 99%, 0.5% Petite Sirah, 0.5% Carignane

Sunset Cellars, San Francisco CA
Established in 1997, Sunset Cellars produces award-winning wines by taking a Zen-like, minimalist approach to winemaking. Their objective is to express and refine the flavors and characteristics created in the vineyard.
All grapes are hand-sorted before crushing. Wines are fermented in half-ton containers and punched down by hand. Racking, done when necessary, is as gentle as possible, and aging features the restrained use of new oak, to enhance the grapes' flavors and not overpower them.
Winemakers Douglas and Katsuko Sparks, along with Associate Winemaker Warren Smith, produce and bottle Sunset Cellars wines in Lake County, at Mt. Konocti Growers in Kelseyville, where they rent space as an independent winery. Their total production capacity is 2,000 cases.
