Masterson, who has a teaching certificate from Brown University, has conducted printmaking workshops at Flatbed Press in Austin, Texas, for over a decade. In addition to making original prints, he also designs artist’s books and curates art exhibits.

"I’ve had many good teachers," says Masterson, "and I’m happy to pass along what they shared with me."

He is skilled in many printmaking processes, including relief and traditional Japanese woodblock, photo woodblock, intaglio, photogravure, monotype, silkscreen, stone and plate lithography, photolithography, and collotype.

Additional information about the workshop:

Masterson’s studio practice is environmentally and biologically conscientious, and includes labeling of all studio materials, proper handling and disposal of waste products, and awareness of personal safety issues.

Workshop supplies provided:

hand cleaner
cotton swabs, craft sticks
water soluble wax crayons
plastic gloves
putty and craft knives
inks
mixed brushes
masking tape
some plexiglass plates
mixed papers
markers
small brayers

Supplies you must provide:

- work apron

- plexiglass plates that meet your specific needs: 8”x10”, 18”x24”, or 24”x32”; you may wish to have two of the same size to print from sequentially; plexiglass sources include home improvement stores and Regal Plastics on Wirt Road, Bobbit Glass on Montrose at W. Gray, and Southland Hardware at Westheimer and Morse in Houston

- tools and supplies specific to your project, such as special brushes, photocopies, special papers, drawings, inks, materials for chine-collé

- additional printing papers, such as Rives BFK, Arches Cover, Arches 88; Lenox and Stonehenge are two less expensive papers that work well in printmaking.

Note: Printing papers are 22”x30”, therefore, 1/4 of a sheet of paper roughly accommodates an 8”x10” plate, and a full sheet can handle 18”x24”. Some people like to have a large sheet that is bigger than the paper, so a whole sheet of several smaller sheets can be bleed printed.
