About the Artist - Ruth Faktor
Ruth was born in Ramet Gan, Israel in 1937. She still resides in Israel, and is the proud mother of two daughters. Most remarkably, Ruth has studied ceramics with A. Doctor, a leading sculptor, as well as noted ceramist, Z. Guri, in Israel from 1973 to 1977. She studied visual arts at the Ramet Gan Art School, where her primary concentration centered on sculpture and modern art. Specializing in hand glazed ceramic relief’s ranging from miniature pictures to larger architectural ornaments, both scales of work carry a narrative of sorts resembling a primitive comic novel. It is as if it was handed down generation to generation, not unlike an epic. The themes most outstanding in Ruth’s ceramics are of the ancient cities in Israel-Jerusalem, Yaffa, and Cesarea to name a few. Other recurring subjects are music inspired, Ruth being a classical music enthusiast. Also, some works feature mother and child, or wedding themes. Ruth’s dominant medium is brown earthenware clay native to Israel. After the initial molding of the tiles they are trimmed into smaller sizes, resembling a puzzle, for the first firing in the kiln at approximately 900 C. The cutting down of these tiles is imperative to the pieces because the larger the clay forms are, the more dramatic the shrinkage and warping will be during the first firing. The second firing, at 1050 C., is done after the glazing of the ceramic, which produces the colors in the final product.Ruth’s work is regularly exhibited in several galleries in Israel. She has also participated in numerous group shows at the renowned Tel-Aviv Artist House, and has had several shows in Germany and of course in the United States
