Item Description
On March 4, 1993, Jim Valvano was awarded the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the first annual ESPY Awards. Valvano was coach at N.C. State whose team upset Houston to win the national title in 1983. In 19 seasons as a coach, he appeared in eight NCAA tournaments, was twice voted ACC Coach of the Year and had a career record 346-212. Valvano is known most for his year-long battle with cancer, and The V Foundation for cancer research, which is named in his legacy. This speech collage includes photos of Valvano as well as a copy of his inspirational Arthur Ashe courage award address. A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included.
