-Three 1.5L bottles of 2006 August West Graham Family Vineyard Pinot Noir Russian River

Vintage Notes

You never know what's going to happen when you combine a young Pinot Noir vineyard with the unpredictable spring weather in the Russian River Valley. In the late spring of 2005 the 4-year-old vines at Howard Graham's vineyard decided it was time to flower just before a freak 7" June rainstorm bombarded the area. This was a serious crop reducer to say the least. One might expect 4-year-old vines to produce anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 tons per acre, given decent weather during bloom. In 2005, the Graham Family Vineyard yielded only 0.67 tons per acre.

With very healthy vines and a crop this low, we were bound to get some great concentration in the wine. However, the bad news is that the 2005 case numbers are down almost 30% from 2004. There's just not enough Graham to go around this year. Luckily, the spring of 2006 was much friendlier to the Graham Family Vineyard and we made more wine for that vintage. The 2005 Graham Pinot gives off a wonderful nose of earth, spice and jasmine tea with hints of black cherry. The palate is quite a mouthful of Pinot Noir with plenty of fruit, balanced tannins and acidity. This is a Pinot that could stand a year or three in the cellar, but it still drinks well now with a long decanting.
