The Araujo Eisele Cabernet and Penfolds Grange will be a great match to any robust main dish and, what better for dessert, than a Rieussec? Araujo's Eisele Vineyard is one of the most respected, highly-rated Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Napa Valley, equivalent to a premier cru Bordeaux. The estate-grown Cabernet is of the highest caliber and distinction, expressing the unique terroir of the property. Awarded 98-100 points by Robert Parker, the 2002 Eisele Cabernet is exceptionally rich, nuanced and precise, a magnificent expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that offers the elegance of a Bordeaux with the power and potency of Napa Valley Cabernet.
Penfolds, one of the most successful firms in Australian wine history, has a 150-year legacy of excellence, but it is best known for a wine that many have called the greatest wine of the Southern Hemisphere, the Penfolds Grange. The Shiraz-based wine is the reference point for most Australian winemakers wanting to produce a world-class red wine. Robert Parker rated the 1996 Grange 93 points but said it would ultimately merit a higher score when it is closer to the time of optimum drinkability. It is layered, unctuously textured and full-bodied, with tremendous intensity and moderately high tannins.
Chateau Rieussec, an illustrious Sauternes estate, with vineyards on one of the highest points in Sauternes, close to Yquem, produces excellent Sauternes year after year. The wine is concentrated but with elegance, rather than being voluptuous and fat. Robert Parker gave the 2001 Rieussec 99 points, calling it a monumental effort, massive and full-bodied yet not heavy because of good acidity, offering a fabulous perfume and an immensely long finish.
