Item Description
WINE- Rodney D. Strong, the debonair Broadway dancer who became one of Sonoma County's best known winemakers, and most eloquent spokesmen, died last year. For decades, Strong was a central figure in the California wine industry, a respected visionary who was passionate about Sonoma County wine. He became the wine industry's elder statesman, traveling extensively to promote the county's wines and was one of the main people instrumental in transforming Sonoma County from producer of jug or bulk wine to top-rated, high quality wine. Strong was an early advocate of vineyard-designated wines, acquiring vast vineyard holdings across Sonoma County, in search of the perfect soil and climate combinations. In the winery, he began to experiment with temperature-controlled fermentation, different yeast strains and styles of oak aging. Strong founded Rodney Strong Vineyards in 1961, which has been owned by the Klein family since 1989.
In honor of Rodney D. Strong, Rick Sayre (winemaker of Rodney Strong Vineyards), Forrest Tancer (winemaker for Iron Horse Vineyards), and Richard Arrowood (owner/winemaker for Arrowood Winery), produced an Imperial of 2002 RDS Meritage, a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. This is truly a one-of-a-kind bottle of wine, made by the combined efforts of three highly-respected winemakers, all noted for the production of world-class Sonoma wines.
-One 3L bottle of 2002 RDS Meritage
