Item Description

This auction item is a stunning Traditional B&W Photograph, Silver Gelatin Print by renowned photographer David Piemonte. Appropriately titled "Storm Over Annisquam Light", the image measures 9x13" and comes archivally matted with a 16x20" graphite colored Nielson aluminum frame, ready to hang in your home.

Cape Ann photographer David Piemonte uses symmetry of shadow and light to create images that are powerful in their simplicity. David's work reflects his deep reverence for detail as well as his own life philosophies. "I'm drawn to simplicity as a symbolic statement of life, and I try to express this in my work. At the same time, I feel my purpose as a photographer is to create images that sometimes ask more questions than they can answer".

David draws much of his artistic inspiration from nature. It is this inspiration that allows him to create black and white floral images of mysterious beauty. As he explains it, "My floral images are ones of solitude and isolation. So often we think of flowers within the context of abundance and color. I hope my photographs allow the viewer to see them from a more intimate perspective". His landscapes have a sense of timelessness and surrealism while his still life images are moody and abstract.

After graduating from New England School of Photography in 1978, David spent several months traveling throughout Europe. It was during his visit to Venice where he discovered the beauty and solitude of night photography. "I've always been fascinated by what the camera captures as opposed to what they eye sees. It's the subtleties that create the mood of an image."

David has resided on Cape Ann since 1980 and has exhibited his work in numerous venues over the years. Even with the advent of digital photography, David still prefers traditional film and darkroom techniques. "It is rare to see photography that is not manipulated in one way or another by a computer program these days", explains David. "My love of photography comes from the mystery and surprise that occurs in the darkroom. The limitations of traditional photography can actually breed more imagination when engaged in the creative process".
