Item Description
This auction item is for a limited edition Giclee #4/75 of the original watercolor, "Sampan On The Jade River" by RAA Artist Barbara Donnelly. Printed on Arches Fine Art Paper, it is archivally framed with an acid free mat. This beautiful item comes in a silver wood frame, and measures 20x24".
The original watercolor for this limited edition giclée, “Sampan on the Jade River - China”, was painted after an exciting trip to China.“It was a delight to find myself riding in a sampan on a rapidly moving offshoot of the Yangtze River. The Orient has always intrigued me, particularly mysterious & exotic China, but I never dreamed of being there.
The water of the Yangtze itself was very yellow due to silt churned up by the boat traffic. However, when we left our ship, everything changed. After transferring to a smaller passenger boat to leave the Yangtze behind, we boarded yet smaller, lightweight sampans to navigate the steep, narrow, twisting gorges of the Daning River.
That was when one could see the color of the water change from yellow to a lovely cool jade green; hence the native nickname, the Jade River. It also was very peaceful and quiet, except for the sound of the rushing water and random riverside serenades by local folk singing and playing their rustic musical instruments.
It was captivating!”
