2004 Sena Aconcagua Valley Red Blend – Chile
94 points from Robert Parker! “The 2004 Sena is purple-colored with a super-expressive nose of toasty oak, earth, graphite, espresso, black currant, and blackberry liqueur with a hint of mint in the background. This is followed by a layered wine with gobs of spicy black fruits, great depth, and a long, 45+ second finish. Give it 6-8 years of additional aging and drink it through 2035. Sena was originally a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Charwick. The first vintage was in 1995 and in 1999 the Sena Hillside Vineyard was purchased. Currently, all the grapes going into Sena come from this biodynamically farmed vineyard. It is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere, and Cabernet Franc. In a typical vintage Sena is about three-fourths Cabernet Sauvignon although in 2003, Cabernet Sauvignon composed 52% of the blend and Merlot 40%. The wine is aged for 18 months in predominantly new French oak.” (Value: $78.00)

2004 Tenuta Sette Ponti ORENO – Italy
The Wine Spectator
: Score: 95 An internationally-styled, super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this wine’s dense aromas of cassis and black stone fruit are offset by notes of herbs, spice and sweet oak which carry onto a ripe palate marked by firm tannic structure. Fabulous aromas of ripe blackberry, cappuccino and toasty oak. Full-bodied, with masses of fruit and supervelvety tannins. Long and gorgeous. All there. Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2009. 3,330 cases made. (Value: $98.00)

Peter Lehmann 2000 Eight Songs ShirazSouth Australia
Eight Songs for a Mad King — This wine (named after a production of The Eight Songs for a Mad King - the story of King George III) is a tribute to the old vine shiraz of the Barossa Valley, which is the repository of some of the worlds oldest shiraz vines.  The Barossa Valley was settled in the 1840’s by German speaking Lutherans and English migrants, many of whom planted vines. These vineyards have been tended over many generations and today, the Barossa is the custodian of some of the world’s oldest and greatest shiraz vineyards.  Peter Lehmann Wines has an intimate knowledge of these vineyards, still nurtured by the descendants of the early pioneers. With an understanding of the qualities of the special low yielding vineyards and the flavor subtleties of Barossa shiraz, Peter Lehmann Wines has crafted an individual wine that is both regal and stylish. Dense black in color, with a garnet rim and a bouquet of dark chocolate-dipped ripe plum aromas with a hint of smokiness, this wine is very approachable now and will continue to develop in the bottle over the next 8-10 years. James Halliday Score: 94 Points (Value: $58.00)
