Item Description
Our hometown University of Rochester Press / Boydell & Brewer, Inc. offers 'Head, Heart and Hand Elbert Hubbard and The Roycrofters' and is published to accompany the exhibition of the same name, the first major assemblage of objects produced at the Roycroft community in upstate New York under the leadership of the charismatic Ebert Hubbard. This book is a sociological overview that anchors the Roycroft community in its turn-of-the-century milieu and the history of the Roycroft shops, and examines them in essays on the books, furniture, metalwork, and the leathercraft they produced. Other topics include the artists attracted to the community's creative environment, with contemporary first-person impressions garnered from the entries in the guest registers of the Roycroft Inn, and Hubbard's role in the creation of America's consumer culture through his tradmark brand of advertising and promation.
