Hugh Sidey's Portraits of the Presidents: Power and Personality in the Oval Office (Hardcover)

by Editors of Time Magazine

Retail: $24.95

This is a photographic summary of the last several presidents up to George W Bush. The selection of photos is good and includes several rare and unique pictures. Hugh Sidey, the author is the expert on presidential history at Time Inc (he writes a weekly column for the magazine) and thus the text is outstanding. If you are a presidential history buff, and particularly interested in photography you will want this book in your library.

Review From Library Journal
Sidey has written his "The Presidency" column for Time magazine since 1966, and in Profiles of the Presidents he shares anecdotes about the human side of the presidents, from FDR to GW Bush. Each president receives two columns, which have weathered well, and a retrospective piece. Among the many incisive columns is a touching remembrance of the dedication of the FDR monument and Sidey's personal favorite about Truman's 1948 "whistle-stop" campaign. Hundreds of pictures from Time-Life include Richard Nixon improving his respectable 180 bowling average and Lyndon Johnson howling a duet with his Yorkie, Yuki. This warm remembrance belongs in all public libraries and on all politically inclined coffee tables.

Description
For 43 years, Hugh Sidey has been reporting on the White House for Time, Inc. His lively column, The Presidency, has been featured in Time magazine during the past seven administrations. Nobody understands the complex interplay of personality and power in the Oval Office better than he. Nobody writes about it with as much vitality and depth of experience. Lavishly illustrated with photographs from Time magazine's exceptional archives, this is a bracing and intimate view of our last eleven presidents, from FDR to George W. Bush. At the heart of the book is a fresh profile of each man, drawn from Sidey's unparalleled access to the inner workings of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Vintage columns, each with a new introduction, can be found here as well.
