Item Description
Locally owned and operated Tropical Salvage makes all of their furnishings from fair traded, salvaged hardwoods.
This beautiful Sculpted Earth teak bowl is made from a salvaged root system of an old growth teak tree. It is handsome enough to display on its own, burly enough to be a vessel for any number of treasures.
The story of this bowl: When Indonesian President Suharto was deposed in 1998, after twenty-one years of strong-arm rule, and the country was for a time up for grabs, most of Indonesia’s government-controlled plantation forests were robbed of their old-growth teak and mahogany trees. The thieves left the trees' root systems behind in the ground. Today Tropical Salvage re-uses these root systems.
Earth Bowls: their wood was once part of two-hundred year old trees; today, their sales fuel reforestation and environmental education initiatives. From the earth, for the earth.
