Item Description

Judd's Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 - One Magnum - Plus Winery Tour and Tasting for Six (6).

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon - One Magnum, Napa Valley

The philosophy behind Judd's Hill Napa Valley Cabernet is about blending from different vineyard sources to gain complexity in the wine. The goal of the father and son winemaking team, Art and Judd Finkelstein, is to make a perfectly balanced wine from the front of the palate to the back. Right from the start, the must on this wine is kept cool (between 65-75 degrees) and un-inoculated for three days. Inoculation occurs on day three and from this point on, the fermentation itself raises the temperature. Once the temperature reaches the mid to high 80s, the must begins to cool slowly until, at dryness, it is back to around 70 degrees. Art and Judd believe that extended maceration, while smoothing out some of the tannins, reduces the up-front fruit and varietal characters, which are the charm of the Judd's Hill wines. Extended maceration is used only if the tannins seem excessive.

Not being fans of over-oaking, Art and Judd prefer to use very little new oak in the aging process. They prefer French oak barrels that have been used once for Chardonnay. A once-used Chardonnay barrel has had wine in it for only 9 months and has enough oak flavors left so that the reds can stay in them for the whole 20 months without the 'danger' of over-the-top oak flavors.

It has wonderful up-front fruit and a great extraction of color and flavor, not to mention a grand and attractive nose. Along with the warm temperatures of 2004, we attribute the concentrated quality of this wine to our estate fruit. The Judd’s Hill estate is a hillside, terraced vineyard that makes up half of the blend in 2004 (with the remaining grape sources being in Stag’s Leap and Oakville). We love the intensity of this fruit and are sure you will enjoy sharing a bottle with family and good friends.

Judd's Hill Cabernet will complement steaks, spicy poultry dishes, cheddar or blue cheese, barbequed ribs and other red meats. Also, we've found this Cabernet Sauvignon to go especially well with Italian-influenced dishes.

Tour and Tasting at Judd's Hill - for Six People

Judd’s Hill welcomes visitors daily by advance appointment for an intimate, sit-down tasting at our winery located on the Silverado Trail, one mile north of the town of Napa.

Our tasting room offers a unique and very personal touch that is quite different from the typical tasting room atmosphere. Pat who has a long history in Napa Valley wine business hospitality, will take you through a sampling of current releases along with a selection of limited edition wines which are only available at the winery or through our wine club. So, prior to your next visit, please call the winery to schedule an appointment to enjoy our very intimate tasting experience.

Judd's Hill

Artisanal. Small. Hands on. Family. Nestled in the Napa Valley. These are the hallmarks of Judd’s Hill Winery, the life work of Art and Bunnie Finkelstein and their son Judd and his wife Holly.

Art has been a winemaker for more than 30 years, beginning in his garage in Los Angeles when he worked as an architect during the day. He rethought his life and brought his family to the Napa Valley in the 1970s to found Whitehall Lane Winery in St. Helena. When that grew too large, they built Judd’s Hill, where the family focuses on making less than 3,000 cases a year of hand-crafted, ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Syrah.

Napa Valley visitors and friends know the Finkelsteins’ domain to overflow with a hugely personal mix of interests and talents, from Judd’s ukulele playing to Holly’s hula dancing to Art’s pottery and cooking and Bunnie’s love of poetry, tuba-playing and knitting. This array of art and the arts may be unique among Napa Valley winemaking families. "The process of winemaking is extraordinary in my experience," Art says. "It has to be the most complex and challenging of all art forms. I am amazed by it."
