Item Description
Authentic and traditional South Aftrican dinner, with exciting influences from all over the continent, will be prepared for eight (8) guests to enjoy in your home. CSD parent, Elma Neethling, will be the chef for this meal, and will provide food only. True Foodies will love reading Elma's description of the dishes. (Item available to the Cambridge Community and Friends only.)
Choose one of 3 meat dishes:
Bobotie: The Greeks have moussaka, we have bobotie, a sweet, soft curried minced meat, baked with an egg-custard topping, served with rice / yellow rice. The first reference to this dish was found in an old Dutch cookbook, but it is the South African Malayans, famous for their aromatic cooking, that perfected it and turned it into a South African household name.
Oxtail: Also found in many Italian cookbooks, we love to cook it in a hearty red wine and add some dried fruit for a unique culinary experience. Served with rice, couscous or a ‘papgebak’. The easiest description for this would be African polenta. Pickled beef tongue (for the more adventurous – it never fails to surprise!): Pickled and cooked till it is tender. The secret is in the sauce. It is an old family secret that we originally got from a (surprise) Malayan women. Also served with rice, couscous or ‘papgebak’. Side dishes (Choose 2): Watermelon, feta and olive salad (no misprint! – the secret is in the sauce) OR Greek style salad with added ingredients OR Strawberry and spinach salad OR Oven roasted vegetables. (potato, butternut, onions, beetroot, mushrooms and carrots) Also included: A choice of starter or dessert – to be discussed.
