Item Description

You don't have to be Jewish to love the Santa Barbara Jewish Film Festival!!

The fifth SBJFF will be held April 23-26, 2009 at the Metro 4 Theatre

Eight outstanding films, including:

  • Strangers.  Israeli feature.  A Sundance sensation about how love and desire don’t always line up neatly with one’s politics or religion.
  • A Love to Hide.  French award winner.  Gripping drama, beautifully executed, that explores family tensions and a little-known side of Nazi persecution during WWII.
  • Max Minsky & Me.  German delight.  Our first family-friendly (but not sappy) coming-of-age tale of basketball and a bat mitzvah. Entertaining for all of us, including children ages 10 and up.
  • Bridge Over the Wadi.  Israeli documentary.  The compelling documentary that looks at the first Israeli elementary school to welcome both Jewish and Arab children. It’s tough sledding, especially for the parents and teachers, but mesmerizing viewing. Discussion follows.
  • The Fire Within.  Peruvian documentary about Jews in the Amazon paired with In Search of the Bene Israel about Jews in India. One is a relatively new Jewish community and the other claims to be 2,000 years old. Yet both have congregations filled with people who follow traditional rituals and yearn to immigrate to Israel.
