ABOUT THE ARTIST: Amalia and her husband Leonard have lived in the Easthampton area for the past thirteen years. Best known for her award winning work in Native American art, the challenge of the Bear Fest was intriguing. Her mother Joyce Neal was a teacher in the Easthampton school system for many years, and helped to develop a local history curriculum for the elementary schools.
ABOUT THE BEAR: Her mother's books, papers and research on the history of Easthampton was Amalia's inspiration in creating this bear - a tribute to Samual Williston and his button factory that changed the economy and culture of Easthampton.
Button Down Bear is also a tribute to Amalia's mother; her initials are hidden within the patterns of buttons. Other hidden pictures are a heart on the sleeve of the sweater, a Native American Medicine Wheel, as a prayer for peace and balance, and an A and L linked together, a symbol of her marriage to Leonard and the support he provided while she worked on the bear.

This bear is a large bear. The measurements are as follows:
Height: 54" from tip of feet to top of ears, 44" from base (where the bottom sits on base) to ears.
Width: circumference - approximately 92" around at the widest point (around the paws and back). Footprint width is 21" and depth is 31".
Weight: This bear weighs approximately 45 lbs.
Other useful information: The bear will come with the log that it was displayed on in the exhibit, and will include the plaque on the log.
The bear is coated with a UV protective clear coat so that the paint will not fade with exposure to the sun.
